第一回学会大会へのメッセージ

大いなる喜びと感動を込めて、来る2010年11月27日に、友人・森洋子教授が現会長を務められる日本ことわざ文化学会の第一回学会大会に、こ の短いメッセージをアメリカ合衆国ヴァーモント州バーリントンから遠い日本にお送りいたします。学会の名誉会員として私は皆様にご挨拶をお送りするとも に、ことわざの国内大会がこの上なく素晴らしく、かつ実りあるものとなりますことを祈念いたします。
ことわざ学に関する多くの優れた発表で学会が満たされることは想像でき、私もぜひ参加したいという気持ちを認めざるを得えません。いずれ将来の学会でご一緒に参加できることを心より願っております。
森教授は私に設立から１年間にわたる日本ことわざ文化学会の活動のレポートをお送りくださいました。この短期間に皆様が実現されたことを拝読し、 驚いております。今から２週間前に『ことわざに聞く』が刊行されたことに心からお祝い申し上げます。その本はまだ私の手元に届いておりませんが、内容から 同書が文学、図像学、教育学、音楽学、宗教学、社会学、心理学、現代の諸問題に言及しながら、日本ならびに世界のことわざ学に多大な貢献をなし得たと言え るでしょう。同書では日本的なことわざの諸特徴に重点が置かれていることは明らかですが、同時にことわざの国際比較の諸問題もいくつかの論稿で取り上げら れており、世界規模でことわざ研究に意義深い貢献を果たしておられます。
学際的、国際比較的なことわざ研究は、その最良の段階では、地域的、国内的、国際的な関心事をことわざに偏在する包括的な表現内容に組み入れます。こうしてことわざのもつ多機能性、多状況性、多義性は様々の領域の研究者たちを魅了し続けているのです。
また私は皆様が小中学生を対象とした「全国ことわざコンクール」の企画および審査をされたと伺い、関心を抱きました。こうした普及活動はことわざ 研究にとって非常に重要です。忘れてはならないことは、ことわざが伝統と革新の一部であり、どのように言語的、文化的、および哲学的内容が知恵と実用の世 界に関わっているかを示している点です。私が生徒たちと過ごした経験によれば、彼らは少しでも（ことわざの与える）知恵に直面すると、ことわざに大きな興 味をもつようになります。子どもたちは彼らならではの喩えや意味を楽しみ、彼ら自身で、おそらく、もっと新しいことわざを作り合うことに喜びを感じます。
こうした観点から、私が「反ことわざ」訳注と名付けたものに皆様も関心を寄せられていたことに興味深く思います。伝承ことわざに対する「反ことわ ざ」の批判的、諷刺的、もしくはユーモラスな反応は新しい世代の精神構造を大いに語ってくれます。「反ことわざ」の中には新しいことわざとしての市民権を 得たものもあります。
ことわざの研究者ならばあらゆる場所で現代のことわざを蒐集し、研究する必要があります！結局、ことわざというのは現れては消えるものであるた め、大衆文化、マスメディア、現代文学、様々な社会集団や専門家集団などのもたらす現代ことわざをさらに研究したいと思っています。これに関連したことで すが、私は畏友チャールズ・ドイル（Charles Doyle）、フレッド・シャピロ（Fred Shapiro）と共著で、『現代ことわざ辞典』（イェール大学出版会、２０１１年刊行予定）を書き終えたところです。同辞典には１５００以上もの現代こ とわざがあり、それぞれの年代と出典が示されています（なお１９００年以前のことわざは収録されていません）。この辞典は英語では初の現代ことわざの収録 でありますが、その他の言語や文化でもこうした現代のことわざの編纂が行われることを願っています。
さて、私から皆様へのお祝いのメッセージはこの辺で終わることにしましょう。皆様はたった１年という短い期間で大変多くのことを実現されました。 世界の国々のことわざ研究者たちは、皆様が独自に日本ことわざ文化学会を創設されましたことに羨望の眼差しを向けるでしょう。学会組織とその際立った活動 は私たちのお手本となるでしょう。初年度にあたり、皆様がことわざ研究の学会メンバーとして日本さらにそれを超えた世界中のことわざの伝統について確実に 優れた学術的貢献を続けられることに、われわれ一同、称賛申しあげます。
私が日本ことわざ文化学会の名誉会員に推挙されたことは、この上なく光栄なことです。この学会が実に熱心かつ精力的であり、成功されておられるか らです。皆様が遂行された、全ての成果に重ねてお祝いを申し上げ、将来の活動のますますのご発展をお祈りいたします。また前述したように、将来、皆様と共 に年次大会に参加できることを心より願っています。それまでは、ことわざの重要な研究に献身している私の研究仲間すなわち日本ことわざ文化学会員の皆様に 幾度となく思いを馳せることでしょう。
日本ことわざ文化学会設立一周年、おめでとうございます。そしてことわざ学の魅力的かつ多面的な諸分野で、疑いもなく、素晴らしいご発展を遂げられますことをお祈り申し上げます。
訳注 後日、ミーダー教授からのお手紙によると、「反ことわざ」anti-proverb という用語は同教授の造語で、伝承ことわざのヴァリエーションまたはパロディをこめて創作されたことわざであるというご説明をいただいた。

Message to the Japanese Society of Paremiology on Its First Anniversary:
It is with much pleasure and excitement that I send this short message from Burlington, Vermont (USA) to distant Japan, where on November 27, 2010, the Japanese Society of Paremiology will celebrate its first year anniversary under the effective presidency of my friend Prof. Yoko Mori. As your honorary member I greet all of you and wish you a most enjoyable and fruitful National Conference of Paremiology. I can well imagine that your meeting will be filled with many excellent lectures on various paremiological matters, and I must admit to you that I would like so very much to be present as well. It is my sincere hope to join you at one of your future meetings.
Prof. Mori has sent me a report on the activities of the Japanese Society of Paremiology during its first year of its existence. It is amazing to find out what all of you have accomplished during this short period of time. I certainly congratulate you on publishing the book Listen to the Proverbs two weeks ago. I have not yet received my copy, but from its description I can tell that it is a major contribution to Japanese and international paremiology, touching on such matters literature, iconography, education, musicology, religion, sociology, psychology, modernity.While obviously Japanese aspects are stressed, the articles are also dealing with comparative issues, making your book a significant contribution to the study of proverbs worldwide. Interdisciplinary and comparative proverb studies at their best combine regional, national, and international concerns into inclusive statements on the ubiquity of proverbs, whose polyfunctionality, polysituativity and polysemanticity continue to amaze scholars from numerous research fields.
I was also interested to learn that you organized and judged a national competition of proverbs for the primary and middle schools. This type of outreach work is very important for proverb scholarship. We must not forget that proverbs are part of tradition and innovation, showing us how linguistic, cultural, and philosophical matters enter into their wisdom and employment. I know from my own experience with school children that they become very interested in proverbs if one confronts them with these bits of wisdom.
They enjoy their metaphors and meanings, and they also delight in sharing their own and perhaps more modern proverbs. In this regard I find it very interesting that you have also become interested in what I have termed anti-proverbs. These critical, satirical or humorous reactions to old proverbs tell us a great deal about the mentality of the present generation. Some of the anti-proverbs have in fact become new proverbs in their own right. It behooves paremiologist everywhere to collect and study modern proverbs! After all, proverbs come and go, and we want to learn more about the proverb of modernity, many of them originating from popular culture, the mass media, modern literature, and various social and professional groups.In this regard I can tell you that my friends Charles Doyle, Fred Shapiro, and I have just finished the work on a Dictionary of Modern Proverbs that will be published with Yale University Press in 2011.It contains over 1500 modern proverbs with dates and references (no proverb is older than the year 1900). It is the first collection of its type for the English language, and it is our hope that such collections of new proverbs will also be compiled for other languages and cultures.
But let me stop my congratulatory message to you here. You have accomplished so very much in just the short span of one year. Paremiologists from many countries of the world will positively envy you for having established your very own Japanese Society of Paremiology. Your organization and your impressive work are a model for the rest of us, and collectively we commend you on your first year as members of a paremiological society that will doubtlessly continue to do a superb scholarly service to the proverb tradition in Japan and beyond that throughout the world.
It is a wonderful privilege for me to be an honorable member of your so diligent, committed, and successful Japanese Society of Paremiology. Congratulations once again on all of your accomplishments thus far, and all the very best to you for your future work.
As I mentioned, it is my sincere hope that I might join you at one of your annual meetings in the future.In the meantime I will often and gladly think of my Japanese paremiological friends as you dedicate yourselves to important proverb scholarship.
Happy first birthday to you, Japanese Society of Paremiology, and best wishes for the future that will doubtlessly bring forth much progress in the fascinating and multifaceted aspects of paremiology.
